Luminous Hills Vineyard is located in the southwest corner of the Yamhill-Carlton district, within the larger Willamette Valley AVA. It is a unique, high-altitude location boasting volcanic soil, primarily Jory, on top of eroded marine sedimentary rock, typical of the AVA. These two contrasting soil types, coupled with carefully chosen Pinot Noir clones, contribute diversity and complexity to the three distinct wines that they produce. Fully organic since 2018, they dry farm the vineyard when possible (irrigation is available as a safety net). Yields are kept to a minimum to ensure the highest quality fruit.
There’s no blanket approach here; each block is treated individually and its unique characteristics brought to life in the winery. All three wines have fresh acidity from the high elevation, subtle oak influence, superb length and structure. They make wines that are delicious to drink young but you can definitely hold on to them for a few years too. The Very Special Reserve Pinot is, unsurprisingly, only made in exceptional vintages.
